The hare led the walkers off downhill on Plymouth Avenue, and across the Sturt river to the linear park footpath. The runners caught up here after an unplanned detour resulting from an interesting interpretation of the map. While the walk pack climbed up through Frank Smith Park (emerging opposite the Blackwood Forest) the runners ascended the opposite side of the valley and had a look at the wetlands off Grand Boulevard Drive. Hungry's planned "follow me" car convoy to his home for the on after came to grief when Ken convinced the walkers that he knew how to find the Duck Inn (a key landmark on the intended route) and blithely led them off along Coromandel Parade towards Aberfoyle Park. At Chateau Hungry, it was shaping up to be a really big feed for the initial crowd of 4, however the remaining 10 eventually trickled in, trailed by Ken who had seen a bit of Cherry Gardens on the way. Wistow, 7:30pm On On : Grays Inn Mt Barker Hares : Ken & Barbie Was : a car convoy to the start at the top of the hill on Yunkunga Rd. A most enjoyable rural circuit, (almost) totally free of traffic and yapping dogs. Run : 1028 When : Monday 26 Apr 2010 Where : Tregarthen Reserve, Cnr Tregarthen and Greenhill Roads, Summertown 7:30pm. Travelled up Greenhill then up Ridge roads, then followed Heysen trail : behind comm. tower with great views of city. Home along Woodshill and Bickles Roads. Run : 1027 When : Monday 19 Apr 2010 Where : Front of HAHNDORF INN, HAHNDORF 7:30 p.m. On On : Hahndorf Inn Hares : Rowdy & Bud Was : "only one hill" according to the hares, who neglected to add that it would seem to be with us for most of the walk. : We turned off the Echunga Rooad just past the cemetery, looping back to town via Yanataringa and Paechtown Roads, before : checking out what was happening in Auricht Road (not very much). Apu has volunteered to take on Webmaster duties to cover : Hungry's pending move to Naracoorte. Run : 1026 When : Monday 12 Apr 2010 Where : Car park, Woodside Hotel 7:30 p.m. On On : Woodside Hotel Hares : Plug & Heads or Tails Was : 10 walkers climbing up to check the view from Ridge Road while Scrubber & Goanna ran up via the Nairne & : Pfeiffer Roads loop. Just when we thought we might get back to the warmth of the bar early, the hares looped us back though : the newish development along St Marks Drive for another look at the lower bits of Jacaranda, before heading home. : Run : 1025 When : Monday 5 Apr 2010 Where : Car park, Council Swimming Pool Cameron St Mt Barker (opp. Mill Lane)7:30 p.m. On On : Great Eastern Hotel Littlehampton Hare : Aussie Was : 9 walkers exploring new territory, starting with the newly bitumised walking trail leading past the rear of the pool : (rumoured to be "the mayor's favourite walk")and linking up with the tried and true Poo Ponds trail (but first having a look : at the historic tree where the first church service in Mt Barker was held in 1842). Zig zagging around extensive : detours and new work in the ponds area, we emerged onto Sawyer Crescent after admiring another splendid old tree : that probably met the "significant tree" criteria long before before European settlement. Crossing Alexandrina Road opposite Mitre 10 we : followed the rough creek-side path through the Reserve and beyond. Passing fairly close to the Waldorf School we trekked across the new : subdivision overlooking the golf course, until we entered the streetscaped bit (which is all complete except for the houses) at Holstein Close. : The hare was disappointed that the streetlights hadn't been put on for us. Then it was on home via Hartman and Alexandrina Roads, with the hare : organising a car shuttle (making a start with his pre-positioned car parked near Mitre 10) to speed the trip to the pub. : The Great Eastern kindly "shouted" us the finger food for the night. Run : 1024 When : Monday 29 Mar 2010 Where : Front of Supermarket, main street Macclesfield 7:30 p.m. On On : Macclesfield RSL Hare : Slacky Was : around the block via Devereaux and Cunliffe Streets before exploring the oval and the BMX track. : On back via Walker and Todd Streets to enjoy great pasties and other goodies at the bar. Scrubber got in late after missing the start. Run : 1023 When : Monday 22 Mar 2010 Where : Pavilion, Ridge Park, Barr-Smith Ave Myrtle Bank (UBD 131 E10)7:30 p.m. On On : Crafers Inn Hare : Hungry Was : Scrubber & Goanna plus late arrivals Slacky, Aussie & Budgie exploring the Harriettes' trail freshly laid from : the back of the cemetery on Glebe Rd, while Hungry led the walk pack up to Sunnyside Rd to enjoy the views. : The official Burnside Council walking trail through the old mine area, offerred by the hare as an interesting side trip, : was rejected after a torchlight inspection of the impressive slope dropping away the 300mm wide trail. (The Council is yet : to invest in wimpy handrails). : Later, at the pub, those who weren't in the boat on the recent Three Amigos fishing trip : heard about Aussie's 80cm plus schnapper, helped aboard by Slacky using an old crab net. : Rowdy was really impressed that the million dollar views on the walk were topped off by $1.60 nosh. Run : 1022 When : Monday 15 Mar 2010 Where : Car Park, Balhannah Hotel 7:30 p.m. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hare : Plug Was : a D.I.Y. excursion for Scrubber & Goanna while the walkers checked out the new subdivision : off Ilinga Avenue, concluded a walk through wasn't possible, and then hiked down to the Golf Course. : Back at the pub (after a reminder to our friendly host) the food was late but great. It was down past the Hospital into Maud Street for a circuit of the Worrabinda Lake, : then to Johnson Street for a peek at the construction site behind the Stirling Hotel. Due to very threatening weather, the short walk then closed with an on home straight down : the main street. 10 (or 11?) gathered at the bar at the Crafers afterwards for the usual. Run : 1020 When : Monday 1 Mar 2010 Where : Corner Merritt Road & Pinchbeck Fire Track (adj to Vision Park entrance)Bugle Ranges UBD 184 H12, 7:30 p.m. On On : Hagen Arms Hotel, Echunga Hares : Bones & Cannibal Was : a gathering of 12 (or 13) excluding Ken & Barbie who were away at Normanville, and runner-free 'cos Goanna arrived : still recovering from a broken toe, and with her car suffering from a flat tyre. As the spare was flat, Scrubber did : a cross country run to home and brought back repair gear in his own vehicle. Meanwhile the walk explored roads and tracks to the south. After a "false trail" excursion for a kilmometre or so into : Schoenthal Road (just to build up the distance) we were turned around for an on home along Juers Road, coming out opposite the pub. Goanna & Scrubber appeared later : to socialise at The Shed. ***Australia Day Celebration*** When : Tuesday 26 Jan 2010 Where : Bones & Cannibal's property, Blakiston Rd Blakiston 12 noon. Run : 1015 When : Monday 25 Jan 2010 Where : In front of Terminus Hotel, Rankine St Strathalbyn 7:30pm On On : Terminus Hotel, Strathalbyn Hares : Hungry Was : over the river and past the grain silos, then through the Polo Grounds to the railway. : Trail then led uphill through vacant land into suburbia, exiting via Marchant Rd to : the Adelaide Road. After A 10 minute loop through the wetlands reserve alongside Braemar Drive, : and disturbing the ducks in one of the remaining pools, it was on home via North Parade and the : riverside footpath. 12 in the pack. : Run : 1014 When : Monday 18 Jan 2010 Where : In front of Macclesfield Supermarket 7:30pm. On On : Macclesfield RSL Hares : Slacky Was : a fairly straightforward stroll around the southerly part of town then through the school yard and across the market grounds, : after which the hare directed us to follow trail down Searle Street, and to stay together. Not long afterwards : trail headed off from Lisa Court (through what Google Earth shows to the the vacant block described as No. 10) : onto a tricky track along the hillside where the pack's progress was watched with great interest -from considerably : different perspectives- by a soaring eagle, and a tethered goat. Budgie took a spill and limped back to the RSL. : A bit of team work got the dog and surviving walkers over a few fences and wired-up gates, after which an old bullock : track took us up to Venables Street for the descent to home. The usual top feed was followed by down downs for Plug (200 runs), : Ken (300) and Budgie for avoiding the tough part of the trail by deliberately falling over. On On : Crafers Inn Hares : Apu Was : a trip past the Uraidla Primary School via Bonython and Swamp Roads, with vistas of heat-ravaged lettuces : on the way. On home via Greenhill Rd. On On : Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton Hares : Rowdy (trail), Budgie (catering) Was : an on out past Dino's old place, then across over into the new 'burbs at Gum Tree Drive : returning to the pub via Woodside Rd and the wetlands park. Late arrivers Hungry & his dog caught the eye : of Budgie (not in Hash attire) while he was cheerfully grogging on at his daughter's place. On On : Charleston Hotel Hares : Barbie & Ken Was : a car convoy up Newman Road through the steadily expanding township of Charleston, stopping for the walk start near the : end of Lewis Road. The walk took the pack counter clockwise through peaceful pastoral countryside via Pfeiffer and King Roads. : A bit of light entertainment occurred in the final stretch on Teakle Road, when the sight of 9kg Pierre terrified 40 tonnes : of yearling cattle. Good food and service at at the refurbished pub. Run : 1007 When : Monday 30 Nov 2009 Where : In front of Miller's Arms Hotel, Nairne 7:30pm. On On : Miller's Arms Hotel, Nairne Hares : Bud & Rowdy Was : where Hungry was made aware by Queenie before the start of the WRONG ADDRESS being shown for the previous week's run, which she had attempted to attend. : Scrubber, en route from Murray Bridge, missed the start, with Rowdy leading the walk pack through the station yard to the wetlands and into the new subdivision : on the high ground beyond, turning into North Road via Federation way. Then into Clydesdale to check out the new housing. Meanwhile Goanna : (with Rowdy's map) took Scrubber on the run circuit which I think traversed Market Place and Woodside Road before following the walkers into : North Road. While everyone else went down to the old Chapman's works for the on home along the main street, Hungry & Pierre discovered that the allegedly closed : footbridge over the creek near the pub was still working well, and shortcut home. On On : Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton Hares : Aussie Was : an educational tour of places of historic and current interest around Mt Barker, including the former railways : concrete water reservoir (now converted into a home, with prize-winning gardens), the new bikeway- not officially opened yet- and the recently erected "Mt Barker" : gateway sign, looking like something abandoned by a travelling circus. Guest appearances at the pub by Ynot, Frank Andrighetto, & Hungry. Run : 1005 When : Monday 16 Nov 2009 Where : Upper Sturt Lodge gate to Belair National Park, Upper Sturt Rd, Upper Sturt (UBD 156, B6) 7:30pm. On On : Crafers Inn Hares : Hungry Was : in a welcome contrast to Hungry's last run in the area, the hare was on hand at the start, & led the walk pack westwards into the park, following : the boundary track. In the meantime, Goanna had driven off to pick up Scrubber, who had decided to cycle to the start. : After a kilometre or so, trail plunged down to the Long Gully Picnic Ground. Here Scrubber & Goanna caught up, passing the walkers and : checking the numerous options available at the bottom. While the walkers strolled down to the Karka pavilion and began the steady ascent : up Melville Gully Rd (admiring a pair of Western Red kangaroos on the way) the runners jogged up the Cherry Plantation Road, through a : a couple of checks, had a surprise return to the Karka Pavilion via a rugged downhill track, and merged into the walk trail for the on home. : Cannibal scored a "new shoes" Down Down at the bar later, for his flashy retro footwear (allegedly second hand, but the beer was ready to go!) Run : 1004 When : Monday 9 Nov 2009 Where : Adjacent to CFS Greenhill Rd Carey Gully (DON'T CROWD THE CFS VOLUNTEERS-IT'S TRAINING NIGHT!) 7:30pm. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hares : Apu Was : 11 walkers doing a clockwise circuit of Badenoch,Bowling Green and Gully Roads (the latter allegedly the : location of pioneer "Paddy" Carey's still-standing barn) with Scrubber and Goanna arriving late and : doing the dirt road bits first, to make the most of daylight. Nice panoramic views as we briefly traversed Rangeview Drive. Run : 1003 When : Monday 2 Nov 2009 Where : Car Park, Hagen Arms Hotel, Echunga 7:30pm. On On : Hagen Arms Hares : Bones & Cannibal Was : a pleasant saunter around the Golf Course for the walkers. On On : Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton Hare : Budgie Was : along the familiar Poo Ponds Promenade, and over the "creek" into Sawyer Crescent via a thoughtfully : mown path through the jungle. Budgie led the walkers over Alexandrina Road at the Fletcher Road intersection : just as Scrubber and Goanna came into sight from the direction of the Golf Course. Then it was on on past : the display homes where the founding fathers would have been running though open paddocks on Run 1 back in : July 90. Then a few dog legs to Wellington Road for the on home. Run : 1001 (INVITATION RUN) When : Sunday 25 Oct 2009 Where : Dzintari Latvian Camp Willson Drv Normanville 10:00 On On : Dzintari Hare : Hungry Was: : an 8:30 gathering for breakfast, followed by a the arrival of Mad Dog in time for the 10:00 car convoy to the Riverside Road Reserve : in Carrackalinga, for the run. The hare produced 4 borrowed milk crates from his car boot, and created a spot of mystification as he : "volunteered" some likely helpers to help carry them, then led the way seawards through the reserve. The crates were the perfect solution to get the pack : across the creek crossing the beach! Then on on towards the distant Normanville Jetty (with Scrubber getting a verbal briefing on the recommended route back, : for the runners, who headed off on the hard sand near the water's edge). Half way to Normanville, the pack was steered onto a boardwalk leading across the dunes, : then via lanes, a vacant block and a spot of bitumen, through a small housing estate to the Normanville-Carrackalinga Road for the return to the cars. : The runners had got back first and Mad Dog kindly retrieved the milk crates. Once back at Dzintari, Hungry organised a "circle" thanked all for attending and awarded : "down downs" to Wrong Way (a welcome back), Slacky (62nd birthday congratulations), Aussie and Pam (his perfect quoits score, lucky card" winners, fund raiser organisers) : Barbie and Joy Parker ("lucky card" winners), Bev (jelly been comp. winner). The hare got a drink too by decree of Joint Master Aussie. : Then it was on on to lunch, the clean up, and departure. : Not mentioned in the weekend write up yet but helping to make it a success: Budgie, Tina, Pink Bits, Matt, Ben and Tanya Slack, Bones & Cannibal Run : 1000 (INVITATION RUN) When : Saturday 24 Oct 2009 Where : Dzintari Latvian Camp Willson Drv Normanville sign on 1:30, run 2:30 On On : Dzintari Hare : Hungry Was : first time out with the Hash for 9 years for Wrong Way, regrettably the only "former" member to attend. : Rain began 5 minutes before the scheduled start, causing a slight delay as the pack of 20 geared up for wetter-than-hoped-for : conditions. Marked trail started in the first side street downhill from the Dzintari entrance, and took the pack in a counter clockwise circuit : offering fine views of the coast. Trail varied from streetscape with views to walking trails with views, to semi rural roads where : a loop gave Wrongway, Scrubber and Goanna some extra "runner" kilometres on dirt tracks. There was a wine tasting opportunity at Trafford Hill Winery : before the steep uphill ascent towards the water tower not far from "home". Starving arrived later in the afternoon to join in : the roast chicken evening meal topped off with apple crumble and ice-cream/cream. A challenging "famous faces" game organised by Aussie and Pam : provided amusement as well as raising some useful dollars to help cover the shortfall in attendee numbers. Photo albums and a scrapbook of photos and : newspaper cuttings helped bring back some memories of past runs and runners. Young Squeak surprised us with a piano recital. Ken demonstrated his : mastery of the fire trade by building an impressive blaze in the lounge fireplace, based on a backlog brought in from where it had been left : by Hungry on a previous visit. GM Slacky presented Goanna with an engraved mug (funded by private subscription) for passing the 100 run mark. : "Pumpkin time" saw the last stayers head for their bunks. On On : RSL Macclesfield Hares : Slacky Was : into Marriott St for a clockwise turn (almost) around the Oval to exit into Walker Street, reversing direction : to head back into town through the gusty wind. Slacky provided a bit of historic background on the old "White Elephant" : bridge as we tramped up Searle Street towards the old factory. A couple of footbridges and a freshly tarted up : $500k pioneer cottage later we were passing the old church and enjoying a stroll down Luck Street before fronting up : at the RSL bar, where Ben kept the drinks coming while Bev served up some top munchies. The 5 minute AGM hardly made a dent in the evening. Run : 994 When : Monday 14 Sep 2009 Where : Car park, Tregarthen Reserve, cnr Tregarthen & Greenhill Roads Summertown 7:30pm. On On : Crafers Inn Hares : APU & Crafty Was : fairly exciting in the first few minutes when a passing motorist hit a dog and the pack spent about 10 minutes : looking for it. It reputedly made a miraculous recovery when it thought Budgie was about to give mouth to mouth resuscitation. : The walk followed Greenhill Road into Ridge Road for a peek at the city lights, then headed back via Woods Hill and Bickles Roads, : into Tregarthen. Queenie and Crafty were first home (but I suspect that was because they started out early, and missed the dog hunt). : Hungry arrived in time for a feed (after already eating with Munno Para Hash at Valley View, but it was a 45 minute drive!), : making 12 at the bar. Run : 993 When : Monday 7 Sep 2009 Where : Car park, Balhannah Hotel 7:30pm. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hares : Aussie Was : a drive out along Junction Road to the corner of Mattner Road. Leaving the : cars there, the pack walked south east along Junction to Daniels Road, where mud : and the odd giant puddle required care. Here we passed Scrubber and Goanna doing the circuit in the : opposite direction, without the benefit of a car start. Reaching the T-junction with Mattner Road, : we climbed eastwards until Official Timekeeper Ken gave the word to turn back : for the cars. The absence of rain was not regretted. Trail emerged on Barker Road, then it was on right onto Native Avenue, back to the vehicles. Run : 991 When : Monday 24 Aug 2009 Where : Car park, Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton 7:30pm. On On : Great Eastern Hotel Hares : Bud & Rowdy Was : problem free as regards rain at the start, when a map or 2 were left under an ashtray on one of the pub verandah : tables for possible latecomers (eg the missing Scrubber and Goanna). By the time the pack got to the reserve at the top of : West Tce we got the same "Hullo Hash" flash of lightning plus thunder boom, as we had on Budgie's run 5 weeks earlier. : There wasn't much time to enjoy the view of the Mt Barker lights before the rain swept in, driven by a fierce wind. : It felt like one of those documentaries on the SAS where the camera crew operate waterproof video cameras while clad in wet suits and goggles, sipping : hot rum through a tube from a plastic bottle. Pity we didn't have the comforts just mentioned..the walk would have been fun if we had. : Aussie was heard to call out from the rear "Let's go back!!". This was where the pack briefly clustered at the hedge by the corner : of Fulford Tce & Wynard Avenue, where the girls were sheltering from the blast. Rowdy decided it was time for a strategic short cut, so it was on home : via Fulford into the Princes Highway, where the weather eased off. However by this time it was impossible to muster enthusiasm for anything other : than a quick squelch back to the pub! Run : 990 When : Monday 17 Aug 2009 Where : Car park, Woodside Hotel 7:30pm. On On : Woodside Hotel Hares : Plug & Heads or Tails Was: : North along the Valley Road then up Pfitzner's Rd for a panoramic view : of the darkness. Then home via Western Branch & Tiers Roads. Cannibal kept reappearing from behind trees, : dealing with multiple coffees imbibed before the run. Runner ranks were boosted by Gunner Schubert, Scrubber's son, : a recent arrival in the Woodside community. Good food at the bar afterwards, as usual at the Woodside. Run : 989 When : Monday 10 Aug 2009 Where : Car park, Balhannah Hotel 7:30pm. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hare : Apu Was : was the Return of Victoria who would have been on the Upper Sturt run the previous week, but for a spot : of difficulty in locating Station Road. Apu took the walkers down to Spoehr Road. The train was early- we missed it. : Bracing themselves against that disappointment, the pack circled back to the pub via Camac and Greenhill Roads, while Scrubber : & Goanna did their own thing in the general area. At the pub, our host Roger was getting ready for a 3 week holiday in the country, : but nevertheless looked after us well in the food department. Run : 988 When : Monday 3 Aug 2009 Where : Car park, Upper Sturt Railway Station, Station Rd Upper Sturt 7:30pm. On On : Crafers Inn Hare : Hungry Was : rather worrying for the pack when the hare was not present for the start. After waiting for 10 minutes, Scrubber reconnoitred up the path : to the railway line and found trail, which led the pack along the track-side maintenance road, to the boundary of the Belair National Park. : Here (100 metres short of the tunnel entrance) a check offerred 2 possibilities. The hare had planned to be with the walkers and lead them on : the true trail. However he had also cunningly hurdled the gate leading to the true trail in such a way that no footprints were evident, encouraging : Scrubber to lead the charge down the false trail, which was fairly difficult to halt given that the "on back" sign was on a 1 : in 4 gradient. : And so it was on up to the next check on Saddle Hill Road. Here the hare would have taken the walkers straight up to the Waverley Lodge gate on Sheoak Rd : but in his absence they took the more roundabout route along the Thelymitre track instead. In the meantime the hare had managed to reach the fringes of : Belair after being tricked by UBD's incorrect mapping of a fire track, shown as leading north from the junction of Sheoak Road and Princes Avenue. This was to have been the : start of a run loop, which would have circled back via Hill Street, to rejoin Sheoak Road. However, instead of exiting onto Hill Street (as per the map) : the fire track in fact loops gradually counter clockwise to rejoin Sheoak Road. This resulted in the hare energetically laying trail in an embarrassingly wrong direction, : increasingly worried by the inexplicable time being taken to reach Waverley Ridge Rd, not to mention enexpected vistas : of the city lights. Thus on exiting from the National Park the pack collectively started heading for Belair. : Hungry had meanwhile reached the sign post for Pony Ridge Road, recognised where he was, : and started heading back up the hill with the hope of still saving the run from disaster. The runners had made good progress until Scrubber : realised that they had been on trail for 45 minutes with no indication of any turn back towards home, and said "This is bullshit". : He headed back with Goanna, turning the walkers back on the way. Behind them, Hungry rapidly backtracked along the fire trail, and emerged ahead of everyone at the : Princes Avenue corner, in time to mark the on home down Ising Road to the railway line (just across from the on out). : Then it was into the van, for a quick search and rescue trip along Sheoak Road, where he found the front walkers plus Scrubber and Goanna. : After providing a few pointers regarding the on home, the hare drove on to pick up the rearguard of Cannibal, Heads or Tails : and Barbie, who were dropped off at the end of Ising Road just as the rest of the pack filed down the right of way leading to the railway. : Amazingly, the pack got back to the cars only 65 minutes from the start! : All 14 of the pack were soon gathered at the pub by the fire for a comfortable close to the evening. : : Run : 987 When : Monday 27 July 2009 Where : Front of Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton 7:30pm. On On : Great Eastern Hotel Hares : Bud & Rowdy Was : 16 walkers/runners enjoying the warmth and great food in the front bar after an excursion down the main street, into Coppins Road and : on to the dreaded Steamranger line. This was (intially) surprisingly easy walking. Later we had to look out for culverts with nothing but cold air between the sleepers. : At one such section Hungry was carrying Pierre, with Slacky just in front saying "I'm not scared......I just don't like it!". : On On past views of the new housing subdivision to the crossing at Easlea Road, where trail left the tracks and the pack headed back : via Junction Road (dazzled by occasional speeding cars) into Littlehampton. Scrubber and Goanna started overtaking the walkers after the laneway : at the end of Monk Tce, from where the on home curved around into Gum Tree Drive and the Main Drag leading back to the pub. Rain had been fairly light but persistent. Run : 986 When : Monday 20 July 2009 Where : Front of Hahndorf Inn, Hahndorf 7:30pm. On On : Hahndorf Inn Hares : Goanna & Scrubber Was : 13 mustered at the start, with CiBull making up for the missing Slacky, banned from leaving home by Bev after being a bit slack with the sugar levels. : Scrubber was very proud of his arrows, which led the pack under fences, through car parks, building sites, motels, hotels reserves and : obscure laneways. Hungry even checked for trail at the open and well lit public toilets off Thiele Grove, and didn't care that there weren't any arrows inside. : Arrows up Pine Avenue hinted at a trip to the Oval and beyond, but trail just looped back along the other side and into Auricht Avenue, : from where the pack explored some interesting new territory in the northwest quarter of the town. Emerging on the main street near the Old Mill art around 8:30 : the pack weren't interested in checking any direction other than the footpath heading for home. Platters of tasty sun dried tomatoe, mushrooms, cheese lettuce and sliced meat : were brought out for us at the Hahndorf Inn, along with bread rolls that looked great on the outside but had whimsically been baked : rock hard by the chef. This provided for some interesting experiences (bread fragments spattering into adjacent beers etc) as eager diners : broke their bread. : Run : 985 When : Monday 13 July 2009 Where : 14 Hawthorn Road, Mt Barker 7:30pm. On On : Budgie's Shed, as above Hare : Budgie Was : a pack of 10, with Scrubber as the lone runner, making the most of heritage verandahs in Gawler Street when heavy rain developed : about 30 minutes from the 7:40 start. Budgie led the walkers via Cameron Street to the fringe of Cornerstone College, then down for a look at : the pool and the Caravan Park. Slacky was becoming visibly agitated at the prospect of Paddy's Hill, confiding that he wasn't carrying : enough lollies to buy some help to the top. However, Budgie chose the Freeway Tunnel and a gentler climb up Hallett Road opposite the : brickworks, where the kilns were in baking mode. Hungry who had left his umbrella behind so he could walk with his hands in his pockets : was increasingly worried by rapidly appearing clouds; Slacky observed that a sudden lightning flash made rain look very likely indeed : and shortly thereafter it started bucketing dowm. Aussie, Ken and Rowdy ended up under a verandah in the Littlehampton main street, after seriously : contemplating a closer look at the invitingly warm brickworks, and were soon joined by Hungry and Slacky. We never did find out where Barbie and Bud : had got to at this point (checking the tea at the Great Eastern?). The rain eased, and it was on on past Anembo Park to home, where Budgie : produced a piping hot and delicious Pea and ham soup, followed by rissoles from the BBQ. The heat-bead packed brazier was much appreciated the rather damp pack. Run : 984 When : Monday 6 July 2009 Where : Car Park, Hagen Arms Hotel,Echunga 7:30pm. On On : Hagen Arms Hotel,Echunga Hares : Bones & Cannibal Was : a pack of 15, including new faces WinjunCow and Sheepdip, members of the Adelaide Harriettes who now own a property at Lenswood. : They missed the start, went for a tour of the town, then came back to the bar where they recognised Scrubber and Goanna. The walk : circled west then north of the town, including Kavanagh and Dolman Roads. Pierre missed the walk due to acute pain from hip displacia : which sparked an evening trip to the canine chiropractor by Hungry. Run : 983 When : Monday 29 June 2009 Where : Front of supermarket, Macclesfield 7:30pm. On On : Macclesfield RSL Hare : Slacky Was : a 50% increase in usual runner numbers due to C-Bull not being rostered to work. Slacky led the walk pack out for : a brisk circuit of Greenhills, Shadygrove and Davis Roads, while the runners did the circuit in reverse plus a few : extra km just for fun. An almost warm wind made many regret extra layers of clothing. Back at the bar, great food as usual from Bev, : and a 500 run Down Down for Bud, with a glass of Muscat as a bonus from barman Ben. On On : Woodside Hotel Hare : Ken & Barbie Was : across into Tiers Road, then turning into Western Branch Road, exiting onto the Valley Road via Pfitzners Road. : Then it was uphill on Charles Street for a whiff of the Chocolate Factory, before looping back to the Valley Road : for the On Home, rain free all the way. Great food at the bar afterwards- I think some shaslicks were still untouched when the evening ended. : Perhaps Schrodinger's cat (who had been mentioned in conversation) sneaked in to clean them up. Run : 981 When : Monday 15 June 2009 Where : Hearing Dog Centre Old Mt Barker Verdun (Hahndorf Freeway exit section, opposite Hahndorf Hyundai), 7:30pm. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hare : Aussie Was : a pack of 13 for an excursion over the bridge and on to a dirt track to Vimy Ridge, followed by a circuit of Verdun. : "Fantastic walk!" was Budgie's succinct synopsis. Ken and Barbie arrived late at the bar. Run : 980 When : Monday 8 June 2009 Where : Front of Victoria Hotel, Strathalbyn 7:30pm. On On : Terminus Hotel, 12 Rankine St Strathalbyn (the friendliest pub in town) Hare : Hungry Was : looking good for a while until Someone tipped a cloud full of water on the hare around 6:00 while he was laying trail, leading : to a soggy withdrawal to the front bar of the Terminus until shortly before start time. This was a good move as the runners didn't show anyway. : The pack of 11 headed out at 7:40, across the park fronting the Victoria, under a cloudless, moonlit sky. : Exiting from the park via Colman Terrace the trail made the most of the heritage verandahs all the way down West Terrace to the Railway Station Yard. : Descending from the platform, the pack followed Hungry through Steam Ranger's collection of yet-to-be-restored rolling stock into : Edinburgh Road, and on to the Cemetery. Here the hare almost apologised for forgetting about a few muddy bits when this contentious subject had been raised : at the start by Plug. "Boot Hill" provided an interesting panorama of the town, with the well lit workings of the new zinc mine visible in the distance. : Trail then crossed into Wyatt Road and down onto a footpath crossing the Angas River, to Langhorne Creek Rd. Then it was on home via South Tce, down the steps by the bridge, : and along the riverside path, with the pack arriving back at the cars an hour from the start. Rain made a reappearance in the closing 5 minutes. : The warmth of the Terminus front bar was most welcome. Run : 979 When : Monday 1 June 2009 Where : Car Park, Salvation Army Shop/Vet practice, 312 Mt Barker Rd Aldgate (adj Bus Depot) 7:30pm. On On : Bridgewater Inn Hare : Queenie & Glenys Was : a lonely run for Goanna, apart from the unseen company of the occasional Koala, following Queenie's instruction sheet directions : to the Stirling Cemetery then into Aldgate via the Valley Road. Walkers also had a direction sheet (just in case) but otherwise : were guided by Glenys with the front walkers, and Queenie further back. A loop across to the Strathalbyn Road and the gloomy footpath on the high side of the road : took the pack past #2 Aldgate Valley Road (Hungry's abode before he discovered Hash in PNG) for a look at the Never Ending Story, otherwise known as the Aldgate : Roundabout Roadworks, where torches were definitely not needed as work progressed under an impressive array of floodlights. From here both : run and walk trails converged and entered Arkaba Road for a convoluted journey to Kain Avenue and and on home along Mount Barker Road from Kain Avenue. : Goanna loped past the walkers somewhere on Old Mt Barker Road. Budgie showed off the impressive jagged cut on his arm at the finish (barbed wire? blackberry bush? koala?..I forgot to ask). : At the pub, Down Downs were awarded to the Hares for a top job, Bones & Cannibal for their joint 100th run, & Plug for his (29/12/08) 150th : which had been overlooked by the Hash Awards Office. On On : Woodside Hotel Hare : Plug (repeat performance) Was : an on out along the Valley Road, with the runners heading North while the walkers walked South. : The two groups later passed each other going in opposite directions on Ridge Road, which Scrubber and Goanna : had accessed via Haughton Road, while the walk pack had travelled via River View & Pfeiffer Roads. At the bar, : Down Downs celebrated Slacky's 900th, Apu'S 200th, & Crafty's 100th. Run : 977 When : Monday 18 May 2009 Where : Car Park, Balhannah Hotel 7:30pm. On On : Balhannah Hotel Hare : Plug & Heads or Tails Was : a somewhat reduced pack of 9, with the walkers doing a circuit of Greenhill, Grasby, Wicks & Oakwood Roads, over the ford by the old cordial factory, : and a long on home on the Onkaparinga Valley Road. Heaps of food at the pub. It was Slacky's 900th run. Run : 976 When : Monday 11 May 2009 Where : Car Park, Bridgewater Inn 7:30pm. On On : Bridgewater Inn Hare : Scrubber & Goanna Was : Almost a live hare event with Scrubber taking off with the flour bucket about 5 minutes in front of the pack. : Victoria & Glenys set off first, followed by Cibull on the 5 minute mark, then the rest of the walkers. Pierre sniffed out trail in the driveway of the Mill, : leading up a scrabbly goat track to the railway and following the line to the level crossing by the now-derelict station. Here it switched to the uphill side, : then across to Barracks Lane and an old footpath on the edge of the railway cutting. Soon the pack found an interesting check, : scrambled over various ditches and an old wire fence, only to conclude that they were in someone's back yard. True trail was discovered, emerging : on an ancient railway bridge on Onkaparinga Road. A check in First Avenue was the first one to defeat Slacky, who had been in front and picked every one right up till then. : What appeared at first glance to be a private driveway proved to be a footpath leading to Itawara Place, from where we trooped down to a check by the service : station on Old Mt Barker Rd. Soon we were emerging from Honeysuckle Lane into the Bridgewater Recreation Reserve, following Cox's Creek to the last check : at the Tennis Courts. On On to the cosy bar with log fire and tasty sandwiches. Run : 975 When : Monday 4 May 2009 Where : Reserve opposite Subaru workshop, corner Longwood Rd & Scott Creek Rd, Heathfield 7:30pm. On On : Great Eastern Hotel, Littlehampton Hare : Hungry Was : a combined trail to start off with, southwest along the walkway through the Park, then down Flaxley Road into the drain reserve by Donoghue Road. : Here the walkers caught up with Goanna and Scrubber who had overlooked trail arrows at one of the trickier checks. Then it was on via the : power line easement to rejoin Donoghue Rd, & into Zanker Drive where another check near "no through Road" Cormorant Court took trail across the nearby Reserve. : At Hurling Drive, the runners headed east, for a brief trot towards Victor Harbor on the Steamranger line before heading for the bright lights of the nearby : Bluestone Estate development, encountering a few water hazards on the way. Goanna swore she followed the Hare's footsteps but ended up ankle deep in mud. : After checking out the new development the runners rejoined the walk trail in a reserve off Alexander Drive, with the arrows leading on : via Edwards Street and another reserve footpath, for an On Home along Flaxley Road. The pack arrived ahead of schedule at the Great Eastern, : where a good spread of sandwiches and a salad plate awaited us. Hungry was awarded a Down Down by the GM after it was discovered that Rowdy was the proud owner : of two 500 Run certificates. On On : RSL, Macclesfield Hare : Slacky Was : a big fib by the hare at the start who claimed it was going to be just over 6km for the walkers. Hungry got off into top gear once : Pierre ran out of pee, and passed the walk pack on the "Mad Mile" (Greenhills Rd), before being passed in turn by Scrubber and Goanna : on Quarry Rd, after they had done a preliminary tour of the south side of town. : Bones and Cannibal had arrived late, took a successful punt as to the direction of the walk, and parked 1km out of town on Greenhill Rd to : join in. From Quarry Road, the trail cut across to the Flaxley-Strathalbyn Rd for a long downhill on home. : Back at the RSL, Bev organised a generous range of munchies while Slacky awaited our return behind the Diggers Bar, : after heading back from the top of the Mad Mile. Bones set up a bocce court which might have been used had the temperature been milder. : Rowdy won the Australiana Quiz with 14.5 points out of 20 amazingly obscure questions. The walkers got back in 59 minutes, guided past loops and false trails : by the hare (who added a few ad hoc short cuts to suit the pace of the pack). On bitumen along Princes Highway and Bald Hills Road, then up a switchback dirt track just before the tunnel, winding through picturesque unfrequented dirt roads to emerge opposite the old Church. A Search and Resue effort was needed for Budgie and Heads or Tails who headed down the wrong track after the walk pack stopped for Bud, who needed a breather on one of the steeper stretches. Hares : Hungry Was : An overambitious attempt by the Hare to exploit the trail networks in Cleland, resulting in a late 8:10 start and improvised arrangements for the Walkers, who strolled towards Crafers on the bitumen, then headed back via an old Telstra cable maintenance track. Scrubber & Goanna got back late after running through Cleland on some of the marked trail, but coming home via the Summit Road (longer but safer). The runners went back via Johnson Road while the on home for the walkers was via the Valley Road with a minor detour up Glebe. Heaps of food at the bar rounded the night off nicely. Hares : Ken & Barbie Was : Across the road and up Tiers Rd, with Hungry waiting a while,leaning on a lamp-post on the off-chance that Wee Watcher might have arrived at 8:00 (No). Budgie's shirt (definitely glowing in the dark)was visible from a surprising distance in the gathering gloom, as the walkers turned right into Western Branch Road, for a view of the lights of Woodside town. On on along Pfitzners Road and across the Valley Road, briefly heading for the Chocolate Factory, but instead of the delightful aroma of chocolate, the evening air was rank with the stench of creosote. The walk trail looped back to the Valley Road and home, while the runners (including Mary) went down Ridge Rd to the Barracks end before coming back to enjoy the beer garden. Car convoy got the pack to the start, the cnr of Woodside & Military Roads. The walk circuit climbed Military Road, then headed south for Nairne along Piney Ridge Rd, offering pleasant views over an undulating rural landscape. The trail then merged into North Road, & over the creek to the pub. Arrows for the runners were missed in the(dark)closing stages leading Scrubber & NoBull to run back to their cars. Other drivers got a van ride to the parking spot. The Sandwich and potato wedge plates produced by the publican were just the right amount for the pack. A good night. On On : Crafers Inn Hares : Hungry Was : A walk in the (Woorabinda) Park for 15 starters, including Whiskers, and Dry Quack ex runner with Nelson Bay Hash NSW, who gamely carried a fully loaded baby harness for the duration. Arrows kept the runners happy despite a high success rate for the Hare as regards false trails. Trail circled through the Woorabinda Reserve exiting into Ethel St, then led through Stirling Oval, Garrod Crescent, Gould Rd, onto the bike/walk path under the pines by the old Marbury School. The Glades Lane fire track and Coromandel Rd led to a 5 way check at the Aldgate Meals on Wheels at the corner of Reserve and Arkaba. The trail dropped over the edge of the old quarry at the back onto a BMX track, then followed the railway reserve westward to Madurta Ave. In the meantime the hare led the walkers on a shortened circuit avoiding run loops on the northern side of Mt Barker Road. At the check in Madurta Rd, most people picked up the walking path through the scrub heading back towards Woorabinda- except for Budgie, Bud and Kaye who were having too good a conversation to worry about "on back" arrows & trail markings in general until the absence thereof finally registered. Fortunately by following the curve of Keroma Drive they spotted arrows leading across the bitumen, and followed us back into the Woorabinda Reserve for a different view of the lake. Back at the pub, Bones and Cannibal turned up too late for a feed, but had walked the full run circuit in the dark after a late arrival at the start. Up Hawthorn, down Bolen then along the picturesque linear trail along the Mt Barker Creek before returning though the Mt Barker shooping district for a very pleasant Christmas jaunt. Our three runners got to travel all the way down the creek to the Lateringa wetlands before having done their penance could return to Budgie's shed and have a beer with Santa. Was good night and great once more to see so many familiar faces from hashes of old. Run : 903 When : Monday 10th Dec 2007. Where : Front of Wistow Post Office. Est departure 7:50pm. On On : Was to have been the Great Eastern, if we hadn't been locked out. Hares : Rowdy & Bud Was : 3 runners got a lift with the (perhaps) 12 walkers, to a parking area on a nameless dirt road about 4km South of Wistow. Here we started off on a Wildlife Corridoor track maintained by the Rodwell Creek/Wistow Landcare Group. The hare claimed arrows had been laid but these were a tad hard to spot until we got through onto Archer Hill Road. On the way the pack as well as the hare appear to have taken the wrong fork in the track, resulting in a spell of exploration around a large dam until the real track was picked up again.On On to a junction with a friendly dog, then home via Vale Road and the bitumen heading back to the cars. Meanwhile the runners ran back to Wistow, except for run/walker Goanna who was getting anxious (like some others who were looking at their watches)and ran back to find the walkers. Arrival at the Great Eastern had been supposedly arranged for 9:30. However when we finally got there at 10:00 the displeased publican declined our trade. Apart from this problem it had been an enjoyable excursion in new country. Run : 902 When : Monday 3rd Dec 2007. Where : Front of IGA Supermarket,Macclesfield. Est departure 7:50pm. Hares : Slacky Was : a bit stressful at the start for Hungry's dog who was forgotten in the car until the pack was half a km out of town climbing the hill on the Echunga road. Hungry's first run in ages (to retrieve the dog)was assisted by gravity. Slacky led the walkers into Shobbrook Rd for a scenic circuit back to Maccy. Meanwhile Scrubber & new runner Matthew took a wrong turn but turned back when Scrubber realised they were heading for Paris Creek. The reunited pack reconvened at the Slack mansion on the edge of town for generous hospitality, the food offhandedly described by Slacky as being "YMCA" in origin("Yesterday's Muck Cooked Again")....but in reality being top quality. Hares : Bones & Cannibal Was : One of those unusual events where the walkers get back (about 10:02)and find that the runners have already been at the bar for an hour. : On out for the walkers was alongside the railway line, heading west. Nice views including Bones' & Cannibal's old horse standing in their back paddock, : in their back paddock,viewed shortly after a halt for a 3,000 tonne goods train. The runners sensibly short cut their assigned route, and passed : us heading back to the bar before we got to the Blakiston Road, whence our pilgrimage took us back to Nairne via Pulleine and North Roads. More pleasant scenery to follow : as the trail turned into Clisby Rd , briefly followed the Valley Road then took us home via Walters and Size Roads. Arrows led the pack along the : old railway line to Mt Barker Junction, then to Littlehampton for a tour of Coppin Scrub, returning home across the : Freeway onto Daddow Rd. On On : ECHUNGA Hotel Hares : John Was : A bit of a worry when we gathered in the pub car park,'cos the pub was in darkness. At the amazingly early hour of 7:45 we started moving off into High : Street (the name being a bit of a giggle as almost all of the town is on the Adelaide Road), with even Wee Watcher having arrived on account of getting : 3 calls re the change of venue! Just as collective consciousness that Bones & Cannibal weren't with us halted progress. As Goanna & others volunteered to wait, : a Savagely driven & familiar 4WD came into view at the pub corner. So it was still one of the earliest starts for a long time. The hare admitted to perhaps a bit over : 8km for the walkers so a brisk pace was maintained. Left into Battunga Rd, then north into Kavanagh Rd, with the hare shepherding us around the corner lest : we discover the on home just over the intersection. With the odd check or 3 trail led counterclockwise to Sands Road, exiting onto the Battunga Rd : (Echunga-Meadows road) via Concannon Rd,for an on home along the bitumen. At this point a loop for the runners took a dog leg across Battunga Rd then up : Bailey Rd for a slightly longer return to Echunga. All back by 9:05, then by consensus (except for Wee Watcher, who headed for home) a trip to Gray's Inn : for beers etc and the toasted-sandwich-in-the Gaming-Bar option. On On : Bridgewater Inn Hares : Scrubber Was : Discovery of a previously unknown fire trail on the north side of Bridgewater, leading to an adventurous steep trail experience : reminiscent of the Kakoda Trail. Walkers had the option of heading back early along the mill race path through Arbury Park : however those in the know thought this might make for too short a walk after some short cutting, so persuaded : the others to sample the thrills of the run trail. : Run : 893 When : Monday 1st October 2007. View from Paddy's Hill, tour of Cornerstone College, a check that the Library was closed, seeing the hare take a tumble on the slope behind the lake (just after saying "be careful here folks!"),then back along the creek. The hare was so keen for the walkers to get their money's worth that the runners got home first (burdened as they were with an injured Garfield that ended up perched on the scribe's windscreen). Was : an intial tour of the new housing estate across the road (with an opportunity to view the Fallen Forest : created by local yobbos in the wake of the developer's landscape gardeners); then into Outer Darkness via : Hartmann and Sims Roads. Occasional glimpses of trail markings laid for the runners. On On : Great Eastern Hares : Budgie Mick Was : 6.4km "around the block" for the walkers, via Balhannah & Nitschke Rds with a sniff of Daniel Road and a dirt track to burn up the runners' energy. On On : Stanley Bridge Hotel, Verdun Bridgewater Inn Hares : Scrubber Was : a return to the area of the fabled tunnel, scene of Tarzan and Mildred's encounter with the Melbourne Express. Also NoBull's first run for months, after touring around Australia with Sally. The hare had gone to a fair bit of trouble setting a tortuous trail largely using fox/kangaroo tracks through the scrub. All this was missed by Hungry, reportedly told by the hare(former local resident)to drive up the first left, then first left again from the pub. When this rapidly brought him back to the main road, he had an unaccountably strong thirst for a Cascade Light, and recalled that a fridge full were waiting for him at home. On On : Terminus Hotel Hares : Rocket Rod Was : 90 minutes for the walkers including a scenic on home facing the lights of Strathalbyn,from a quiet ridgetop somewhere on the Old Bull Creek Rd. The start was somewhat novel, with 2 options labelled "W" and "F" .The pack was too polite to ask exactly what they stood for after the blokes were told to start from "W" while Scrubber & the ladies kicked off on the F trail. The Hare had put down a fair few arrows including numerous checks in the town area however Scrubber lost trail on the edge of town resulting in an ad hoc circumnavigation of Strath (which possibly saved him from a run to Bull Creek). A good night's outing enjoyed by all. Run : 870 When : Monday 23rd April 2007 Where : Piccadilly Rd frontage of Reserve cnr Atkinson Ave & Piccadilly Rd Piccadilly. Est depart 7:45pm. On On : Crafers Inn Hares : Apu Was : an opportunity to see the CFS setting up a road accident simulation as we traversed the high side of the valley along Sprigg Rd. In the meantime we had helped another lost motorist, getting to be a regular feature of walks nowadays. An obscure fire track provided a final and interesting ten minutes on the eastern side of Piccadilly Rd. Scrubber and Goanna got their bonus runner kms in the direction of the Golf Course. On On : Lobethal Hotel Hares : Heads or Tails Was : 7.4km for the walkers (over the oval, Golf Liks Rd, back via Western Branch Road) with the Lone Runner doing 10.2 (out to the Onkapariga Valley rd then joining the walk route via Pfitzner's Rd.). It was Slacky's 800th but he pleaded driving duties when a celebratory down down was hinted at. Excellent mini pizzas & sandwiches. On On : Hungry's Back Yard Hares : Hungry Was : A 90 minute outing for the walkers because Hungry had (a) slackly not allowed for 10 years of jungle growth and new (very barbed)fencing since his last excursion into the forest behind Bradwood Park and (b) turned in the wrong direction on emerging onto Longwood Rd (distracted by relief that the pack was laughing and chatting, rather than bleeding or carrying the disabled). In the meantime, unexpected runner Sue from Sydney was circuiting the region with the Hare's only real map. The walking pack viewed the industrial hub of Bradbury, descended Terrara Lane, then climbed up to Nicholls Rd via fire tracks and someone's front yard. Some added interest was provided in the closing stages by an opportunity to offer a range of travel options to a lost Italian who had been seeking to reach Stirling by driving towards Mt Bold. Then the fortuitous sighting of the Bradbury CFS station lights corrected another navigation error, enabling the pack to reach the safety of their cars, discovering that Sue had despaired of their return and left.
